  1. Bright Ideas for Lighting Your Space

    August 21, 2012 by DevlynGorby

The importance of proper lighting design is often dismissed. The three types of lighting are ambient, task and accent.  Only when these three light sources are used wisely will a room be at its most comfortable and inviting.

    Ambient Light

Ambient lighting, often referred to as ‘general lighting’ can be the light flooding in your windows or the lighting that replaces natural light. Some fixtures that give off ambient light are:

    • Ceiling fixtures & chandeliers
    • Recessed lights
    • High wattage wall lights
    • Torchiere style floor lamps

Task and Accent lighting should be built upon this base of ambient lighting.

    Desk Lamp for Task Lighting

    Task Lighting

Task lighting is ideal for reading, cooking, grooming, etc. Examples of these light fixtures include:

    • Table & desk lamps
    • Adjustable wall mounted fixtures
    • Kitchen under mount lighting
    • Hanging lights
    • Recessed lights and track mount
    • Vanity fixtures
    • Floor lamps

Give ample thought to the activities performed in each room to determine the best fixtures for each task.

    Globe Lamp for Accent Lighting

    Accent Lighting

This type of lighting will set the mood of your room.  It can be used to accentuate architecture & window treatments, draw attention to decorative objects & wall art, and draw the eye away from less desirable elements.  The following are types of accent lighting:

    • Up lights
    • Art lights
    • Candles
    • Focused track or recessed lighting
    • Any lighting on a dimmer
    • Decorative wall sconces
    • Interior cabinet lighting

Consider the ambiance you are trying to produce and capture it with accent lighting.

  2. Design Tips for Decorating a Small Space

    August 7, 2012 by DevlynGorby

If you are limited to decorating in only a few hundred square feet, it will be challenging to create an impression of openness.  However, with proper space planning and skillful selections, a small space can be just as esthetically attractive and impressive as a larger one.  There are several things that can be incorporated when decorating small spaces that will lend toward the illusion of spaciousness. The following are my design tips on the matter.

    Oversize Mirrors

    Mirrors

Mirrors are reflective and create a sense of brightness and airiness. Here are my design rules regarding the use of mirrors in a small space.

    • Instead of using a collection of smaller mirrors, install an oversize one with a stunning frame.  In lieu of hanging, simply lean on top of a mantle or accent table. An arrangement of several small, framed mirrors will create visual clutter and defeat your goal.
    • When possible, install your oversize mirror opposite a window… this will increase the reflection of light and highlight the view outside the window. It will also visually ‘multiply’ the amount of windows, therefore creating an airier ambiance.

    Large Furniture Pieces

    Large Furniture Pieces
It sounds counter-intuitive, but when placing large furniture into a small space, it will in reality make the space appear grander. Small pieces, over-crowded into a petite room, look cluttered and impair the function. A well-thought out space plan that incorporates larger pieces will be extremely functional and lend to the perception of vastness.

    Armless Options

    Experiment with Armless Options

A technique to maintain a voluminous impression in a smaller room is to include armless seating.  They inhibit visual clutter and produce the semblance of increased space. Be sure to choose these pieces wisely and with a view to practical function and comfort.

    Tailored Roman Shades

    Skip Over-worked Window Coverings

Always install tailored window treatments in a small space, the simpler the better.  Roman shades and horizontal blinds are good examples.  Elaborate, flowing drapery are sumptuous but will dwarf a small room.

    Knits for the Home

With the pastime of knitting becoming so popular, we are going to see more and more knitted items for the home.  From the expected blankets and pillows to the less ordinary lampshades, slipcovers and containers (See below).  Handmade decor items, either purchased or crafted by your own hands, make memorable and meaningful gifts that will become cherished keepsakes.  The cable knit is a timeless classic that can be incorporated into ANY design style.

Add a knit pillow or blanket to any bedding collection to create a handcrafted feel.

  4. Affordable Artwork

    June 26, 2012 by DevlynGorby

Decorating large walls on a budget can be challenging.  One affordable solution is to install a WALL DECAL.  They come in a wide assortment of styles and sizes, at a modest price point.  From flowers and trees to adages and proverbs—decals are available in many easy to apply variations.

MURALS are another cost effective solution for decorating a large expanse of wall space.  They are available in the form of easy-to-apply wallpaper.  Consider a “photo mural” of the great outdoors or a specific motif in a repeating pattern.  Either way, they provide substantial impact with very little investment.

  5. Make Your Room Distinct

    June 14, 2012 by DevlynGorby

Apply wood flooring or wallpaper to your ceiling!  Add uniqueness to a room by using common materials in an unorthodox way.  Pair with boldly painted crown molding, or an unexpected wall color, to express your style and individuality.

  6. Outdoor Entertaining Ideas

    June 7, 2012 by DevlynGorby

    Decorated Bottles

    1.  Decorate some bottles!   Soda, sparkling water, flavored lemonade and even pickles & olives become party decoration when covered in pretty paper and adhered with tape. Use leftover wallpaper or gift wrap that coordinates with the style and theme of your decor.

    2.  Create an earthy, natural centerpiece with rocks from the yard and garden center moss.  Liberally intersperse with votive candles.  This type of low profile decor is very conducive to conversation!

    3.  Outdoor Photo Display.  Meaningful framed photos mounted in the outdoor entertaining area make your party more personal!

  7. MIX IT UP

    March 30, 2012 by DevlynGorby

Simple Ways to Revive Your Decor

To Refresh Dated or Traditional Decor: Replace old pillows and rugs with vibrant, high-contrast patterned ones. Add bold paint color or wall coverings. Swap out conical coolie lampshades for round, oval, or rectangular “Drum” Style Shades. Blend posh/ ornate, metallic mirrors, lamps and tables with clean-lined modern furniture to instantly dress up your room and express your individually. Incorporate casual, rustic elements with older refined classics, or antiques. Example: Pair an unfinished/reclaimed plank dining table with formal Louis style chairs upholstered in cozy, inviting fabric.
